The Other Brothers are a real good band
We were fortunate enough to be part of a most enjoyable concert on Friday night. Chris Neufeld and Donovan Giesbrecht, a.k.a. The Other Brothers, launched their already-acclaimed CD, "Points of View." Their music is so simple, and yet it cuts straight through the heart of music itself. Their harmonies are rich, their guitar work is sublime, and the combined effect is one of pure greatness. If you're in the Winkler area tomorrow, you can hear them at 7 PM at Covenant Mennonite Church.

Coming to you from Radio Land
Last minute warning - Simon is going to be playing and chatting on CKUW's "Same Train Different Time" on Tuesday night, some time between 6 and 8 PM. Ohter musical guests include Mike Petkau, Chris Neufeld, and Mike Peters. Listen in!

so sleepy
We're taking things a bit easy for the next couple of months while we take care of some non-Landian responsibilities. We'll be back again in April. And you can still hear us play music sometimes. Like this weekend on The Vinyl Cafe (Stuart McLean is playing one of our songs, and dedicating it to some fellow Winnipeggers who wed this last summer). Or at the Winnipeg Mediation Services fundraising pancake breakfast on February 13. You can read about our non-musical activities at our life blog, or you can read about my reading project at the Dickens blog. Or you can listen to some odd, one-off recordings I've collected into what I call "The Chumpend Songs."

Until we meet again. Simon.

3 night engagement
The Gas Station Theatre is putting on a patio concert series this summer, and The Land has been invited to provide the musical entertainment on three consecutive nights - August 7, 8, and 9. It's going to be a fun time.

In other news, less infrequent postings of information have been occurring on the "life" page of this website, which is located here. So if you are feeling neglected, go to that page and you might (if you're lucky) feel better. But don't get your hopes up at this point.

2 more opportunities to listen
This Tuesday, you will be able to listen to The Land on the Radio live, with Chris Neufeld as well! We'll be on CKUW, 95.3 FM in winnipeg, CKUW online. Somewhere's between 6 and 8 PM... Then two days later, rise early and hit the ground running with a delicious pancake breakfast to support Mediation Services Winnipeg. For only $5 you get a nutritious breakfast, live entertainment, and an excuse to leave the house on Valentine's day! What a deal. Go to Mediation Services Website for more details.

Kram Ran is not a pallendrome.
But it would make a good cryptic crossword clue. The man behind the moniker is releasing a new acoustic album, titled "For Love No Matter". The Land will be performing at his release show, February 8 (details to the left). Until then, visit Kram's myspace for a preview.

Christmas Show
Look to your left for details about a show we're playing at the new Academy Bar and Eatery location, which is actually called Academy Food Drinks Music, 437 Stradbrook Ave (which is in Osborne Village). We've decided not to charge a cover - our Christmas present to you. So come out and enjoy some refreshing food, drinks, and music on December 12. Later, Simon.

Omnibus posting
Number 1: We have a show coming up NEXT WEEK. Sorry for the short notice, folks. I'll post more information as it becomes available.

Number 2: We are on iTunes! I just checked and sure enough you can download all our greatest hits without having to purchase the entire album. Of course, you should buy it from us because we went to a lot of trouble finding a manufacturer that wouldn't kill the planet. In case yo uare interested, you should visit Earthology Records who are doing an amazing thing. Just read about it. Really great. And back then the Canadian dollar was definitely not par, so there you go.

Number 3: We're blogging again. Go to our blog page to read occasional thoughts and news about our non-Landian lives.

That's all for now. Simon.

Summer chills
The weather may be deceiving, but summer is here. We're playing a couple of shows in the next while, including the infamous MCC sale. We'd be happy to play shows with you if you're putting something together. Just get in touch with us.

The Land on the Radio
You can listen to Simon play a few songs off the cd live on UMFM on Friday afternoon. Sometime between 1 and 3. Not sure when exactly. He's part of an interview about the upcoming Mennofolk music festival. UMFM is at 101.5 FM in Winnipeg, and online at www.umfm.com. So listen will ya?

Mennofolk
Yes, we're Mennonite. So we're playing at this year's Mennofolk shindig. Friday February 23. See their Myspace page for details.

Upcoming show
Look to your left and you'll see the details for a show we're playing next month. It's a fundraiser for Christian Peacemaker Teams.

Hope to see you there.

Show this Friday
Look to your left and you'll see the details for a show we're playing with Darren Day, Chris Neufeld, and Bill Western. It's gonna be a great time. Music starts around 9 PM at Academy Bar and Eatery.

In other news, Happy New Year! Hope 2007 treats you well.

Pictures! CBC Radio 3!
New Music Canada is no more. It has been merged into the awesome and good CBC Radio 3 website, at radio3.cbc.ca. So to find our music, go to HERE.

Some of you may have noticed that the pictures on the see and hear page haven't been changing. Well, to rectify that I am working on putting together a picture supplement. I'll let you know when I get that finished.

g**gle
I don't think there is anything wrong with vanity searches - typing your own name into a search engine to see what's out there. So I've been checking every once in a while to see how well we, the land, fare in the google rankings. Just last week some planets must have aligned, because we are now in the first page of results when you search for "the land". Hmmm now I know why they call them "vanity searches." This post reads pretty lame.

Electric guitars
Judith and I played a set the other day; I used an electric guitar. I broke a string, you see, on the acoustic a day before the show. So there had been this safety blanket - the acoustic guitar had been the norm for a long time. We'd done a song or two with electric guitar but not live.

So the other night we pulled it out for a live set, and it was a bit of a breakthrough. Went really well. I think we're on to something here. But not rock and roll. Not yet.

AIDS fundraiser
2006 marks the 25th anniversary of the emergence of HIV/AIDS. In relation to this anniversary, we invite you to join us on November 29th for an evening of edible, visual, and musical art in celebration of life both here at home and half a world away. There will be a line-up of local musical talent as well as a silent auction of visual and edible artwork. All the proceeds will be going to aids relief in Africa.

Date: November 29
Location: The Park Theatre - 698 Osborne Ave.
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Price: $15.00
Tickets: available from Miriam 779-8594 & Theresa 663-5290
Please come out for this important event. We look forward to seeing you there.

CD availability
Judith and I have been keeping ourselves occupied with non-musical pursuits lately. Such as moving into an awesome new apartment. And we can look forward to living there for at least 12 months in a row. An improvement over our no-more-than-3-months-per-residence habit we'd developed since Christmas. In other news, we've got copies of our CD's for you to buy at stores in Winnipeg. Specifically, you can go to Music Trader (in Osborne Village), Into the Music, or the Folk Festival Music Store (both in the Exchange). There are still copies of the CD at CD Baby available for purchase. Simon.

Thanks a million
Just have to say that this evening was an amazing time. To all of you who made it out tonight - thank you so much. And to Mondragon for the amazing venue and great food and drinks. Look forward to doing this again sometime...

The big day today
Running errands today to get ready for you. We'll see you at the Cafe at 8:00PM. Can't wait.

The movers, the shakers
Tomorrow night we've gotta be outta our apartment. But we've gotta wait until Sept. 15 before we can get into our new apartment. So it'll be some awesome weeks of couch surfing in Winnipeg. Can't wait. By the way, we're on the Breakfast Show on CityTV tomorrow morning sometime between 7 and 9 AM. Feel free to watch if you're up that early.

CD Release Date Confirmed
Look to the left to find the details for our CD Release show. We'll be playing at Mondragon Cafe and Bookstore at 8:00 PM on Wednesday September 6th. Hope you can make it.

Shows
The Land has a few dates to put in your book - August 19th we'll be playing a show at Academy Bar and Eatery with the talented and handsome Chris Neufeld, who will be joined by pedal steel master Bill Western. We'll be heading to Winkler for the September long weekend, playing a show Saturday, September 2, at Cafe Ten Twenty Seven (1027 Mountain Ave). This is a VERY cool joint in Southern Manitoba, where you will find Nucci's Gelati, all kinds of fun candy, and a Thanksgiving pack of Jones Soda (if you don't know what this is, see this and you will know why this is a truly unique store.

Website overhaul
Things are moving right along here in Winnipeg. Summer's beautiful, isn't it? The site has been revamped a bit. Streamlined, perhaps. If you run into any bugs or glitches, please let us know.

good news.
As we pack our bags for a 2 week trip to Korea, The Land's debut self-titled album has been sent to the manufacturers, Earthology Records, a very cool record company with lots of good ideas, run by the brains behind Minnesota's Cloud Cult. Just a few more weeks until launch. We'll keep you posted for CD release details.

Show June 10th on Dominion Street
The Land will be appearing at the Dominion Street Festival, on the evening of Sat. June 10. See you there!

Winnipeg. Hello.
Hi Winnipeg. Nice to see you again. It's been a while. How are you? Are we still friends? Will we be able to get along? Yes, we're hopeful, too. Maybe soon we'll be able to play some music for you.

But first things first - a two week trip to Korea at the end of May.

New Music Canada profiles The Land
Writing from Calgary, Alberta: We just found out that New Music Canada has profiled The Land on their front page - saying that if you like Yo La Tengo, you'll like The Land. They also say "Judith and Simon have a certain musical chemistry and the end result is exquisitely simple." Thanks to supporters of independent Canadian music. We'll be back in Winnipeg tomorrow night, at which point work on getting the CD manufactured will resume in earnest.

New Music Canada welcomes The Land
There's a new place to listen to The Land, at New Music Canada. A very good site with tonnes of music from all over the musical map. So if you like streaming audio, and want to support all-Canadian music, go to that site and start listening to the sounds you hear. A direct link to our music is HERE.

The end is extremely nigh
Our time in Mexico is soon to enter a new chapter. The school we are helping at ends April 2nd, at which point we are on our own. We'll probably head south towards Mazatlan first, and then once there, we'll turn around and start heading back north. We will probably be back in Manitoba by the end of April. We'll see how quickly we can get settled in and start playing shows and maybe, just maybe, finishing that ol' album we've been working on...

Chumpends
I've put a new song on the chumpends site for you to listen to. Hope you like it. Hope those tories don't get more seats than the libs and the ndp combined. it is our only hope.

Thanks for visiting our home on the land, www.homeontheland.ca. The Land is a musical project by Simon Neufeld and Judith Klassen. Guitar, Voice, Viola, Banjo, Mandolin, Synthesizer, all blended into an analog sound of their own. Hear it. Love it. We can put your children to sleep. The Land is currently based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
